NATHAN

He huffed when he entered the warm house and closed the door behind him. He couldn’t wait to get the whiskey from under the kitchen sink and warm up. Today was a productive day, and he’d earned the damn thing.

He took off his gloves, jacket, and beanie, and rubbed his hands together. He was about to head into the kitchen when his eyes fell on something on the floor. Fresh, wet tracks leading from the foyer into the living room.

Someone was in here.

With his eyes trained on the living room, he fumbled with the jacket on the hanger until he found the pocket knife. He unfolded it, his still-numb fingers gripping the hilt tightly.

It was possible that someone had simply wandered into the house, not knowing it was occupied, but Nathan liked to always assume the worst first. That way, he would be ready for any bad outcomes.

Quietly planting one foot in front of the other, he sneaked toward the entrance of the living room. He peeked toward the footprints that wound toward the TV. He immediately noticed a head poking above the headrest of the couch. Nathan adjusted the grip on the knife, his heart hammering in his chest like a piston.

He took one step forward. Then another, inching closer to the oblivious figure.

A cough filled the room, causing Nathan to stop. Then came a husky, feminine voice. “Took you long enough.”

Nathan didn’t move out of sheer hope that the woman wasn’t talking to him and that he still had the element of surprise. Not that he needed one because the person on the couch looked small and frail, but one thing Nathan had learned in prison was never to underestimate someone based on their size.

One time, some short Mexican guy had been provoking Nathan, and when Nathan finally caught up to him, he was surrounded by his gang and beaten badly. They would have killed him if the COs hadn’t interfered.

The woman on the couch craned her neck toward Nathan. “You just gonna stand there?”

Nathan knew the woman. He didn’t know her name, but he’d seen her. She was always smiling when she spoke to others. Not right now, though.

Nathan noticed the open bottle of whiskey on the table and a glass in her hand. She found his stash. He clenched his jaw in anger. Who the hell did this bitch think she was, coming into his house like this and drinking his whiskey?

“What the fuck are you doing in my house?” he asked.

The woman seemed unfazed by the harsh question. “Correction. This isn’t your house because you already have one. You can’t claim more than one house for yourself.”

“You need to get the fuck out of here before I throw you out!”

The woman took a sip of whiskey, made a bitter face, and waved him off dismissively. “Relax. Take a seat. Have a drink. You’ve earned it after your little expedition out there.”

That made Nathan’s anger soften up. She’d seen him go out there.

“You’ve been following me?” he asked.
